Pick of the Week — Domaine Les Chardons, Sauvignon Blanc, Touraine, Loire

If you're a Sauvignon Blanc drinker, we are confidant that you will enjoy this well-made, flavorful Touraine from Sophie and Thierry Chardon. The Windham Wines tasting group got together a week ago and each of us rated this our number one white of the tasting (out of a total of 15 whites). It was our favorite because we all felt that it was drank above its affordable $13.99 bottle price -- and, it's organic! We were sitting outside in the early evening and all agreed that it would be welcome on each of our porches for the remainder of the summer. This Sauvignon Blanc has lovely aromas and flavors that range from crisp cucumbers and wet stones to lemon drops and sweet alfalfa, though admittedly the latter may have been inspired by the tractor haying the field across from the porch where we were tasting. We thought that it would partner well with a chilled cucumber soup (a simple, delicious recipe from Cedar Circle Farm a bit north in East Thetford) with either dill or mint; pasta with fresh peas, lemon zest and mint; roast chicken; seared scallops, simply prepared with a lemon-herb dressing. And, of course, it is also just so pleasant as… Read More »

New Arrival — Domaine des Corbillières, Touraine Rosé, Loire

Rosé Domaine des Corbillières, Touraine, Rosé, 2013 This is a really enjoyable wine. I am so glad that Fore Street in Portland made a mistake and served me this instead of the Domaine des Corbillières, Sauvignon Blanc that I ordered (and already knew I liked, and which would've been a great complement to the excellent baked North Haven mussels appetizer). With a superb dinner, this little rosé was a happy discovery. Often, rosés from France’s Loire Valley can have a vegetal quality to them, but this blend of Pinot Noir and Pinot d’Aunis offers plenty of fruit in the glass: cranberry, blueberry, cherries, tart tartin, with a finish of orange zest and, for those of us old enough to recall it, Beeman’s gum. [caption id="attachment_1685" align="alignleft" width="150"] Hand-harvested grapes from Corbillieres emptied into wagon[/caption]   We feel fortunate to have this rosé available at this price. Only 1300 cases were made. Dominique and Veronique Barbou, owners of Domaine des Corbillières, farm their grapes with as light an environmental footprint as possible, growing only indigenous varieties, foregoing chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and hand-harvesting grapes.  This Loire rosé is going to be a welcome addition to a wide range of foods, from fresh greens… Read More »
  • New Arrival — Yves Leccia, Blanc, Corsica

New Arrival — Yves Leccia, Blanc, Corsica

White Yves Leccia, Ile de Beaute, Blanc, 2013 This wine blew us away with its purity. It has an intensity of flavor yet an ethereal lightness. It is the essence of an island—all bright sunshine, wet sand and salty sea breeze in a glass. [caption id="attachment_1674" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Yves Leccia, view from Patrimonio[/caption]   The Yves Leccia Blanc is a blend of Vermentino and Biancu Gentile. While we have a few Vermentinos in the shop, we have no Biancu Gentile, . . . until now. We opened the wine and right away it was clear that there was something different, and special, going on in the glass.  Noted wine authority, Jancis Robinson, recently published, Wine Grapes, the definitive tome on the ampelography (identification and classification) of wine grapes. According to her, Biancu Gentile is a “rare, aromatic Corsican,” and by rare, we are talking just 6 hectares in the world, all on Corsica. Here is a link to a really interesting post, if you would like to dig deeper. [caption id="attachment_1680" align="alignright" width="150"] Vermont Shepherd[/caption]   Simultaneously playful but serious, the Leccia Blanc offers a delicious wine to enjoy on its own, but it will enhance any table featuring a… Read More »
